In 2005 with a dream fulfilled by means of a one woman trip around the world, a highly successful career, a house of her own, a loving family, great friendships and in some cases lifelong friendships behind her in the UK, Jacqui was to emigrate at the pivotal age of 40 for the love of a man she had met on her travels! She arrived in Australia with one bag of cherished possessions, full of passion, fear and anticipation to begin all over again. A new relationship bearing more than its fair share of imponderables, no friends, family and most importantly absolutely no personal history – not one person knew who she was including her new found love.
Jacqui, a once confirmed woman of independent means became dependant – no visa meant she could not work in Australia and within a few short weeks the new, unproven relationship and everything that went with it for the most part, left her desolate. It was sheer inner strength and the knowledge that a 24 hour flight could reverse what she had done that enabled perseverance. But, within a few short months of considerable highs and lows, Jacqui flat-lined, literally… A horrific car accident left her on life support for three weeks in a foreign country 12,000 miles away from home with life threatening injuries and 17 surgeries to overcome. Jacqui’s life had come to screaming halt. Her fight for life certainly started in ICU but it wasn’t until she finally made it out of there that her real fight began! For a while, it seemed as though she had lost everything, her sense of identity, direction, career and her fledgling relationship, not to mention a need to come to terms with her real and potentially formidable disabilities.
Today is a different story. Jacqui has not only rebuilt her life, she has triumphed over it. And, yes, even her relationship has withstood a near impossible test and finally flourishes. She is back as a woman of independent means, she has learned what it takes to win through in her relationship with her partner – another person of huge independence and create a future which commands respect not just for her but for the two of them. Jacqui attributes her remarkable recovery in no small part, to the strength of trust she has in the very conscious and tenacious relationship she has with herself.
